I can apply my knowledge of adverbial clauses

I can apply my knowledge of adverbial clauses and connectives to see how ideas are linked in texts.

For reading I have been learning about adverbial clauses. I have found this learning pretty easy because I just needed to recap what I had learned last year.

In this activity (Link to Activity), I had to add/ change the adverbial clauses in sentences.

The water cycle

                                    The Water cycle:
The water cycle is a repetitive process, that contains four stages. Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation and Runoff. Furthermore, water is recycled throughout this never ending process. In addition, the process the water goes through is between land, sea and atmosphere. Moreover, throughout this process the water changes state between a liquid, soil and gas. The first step in the water cycle is Evaporation.

The unofficial first step in the water cycle is Evaporation; evaporation is when the sun heats up water in the ocean, river, lakes, puddles etc, it then evaporates into a gas. In addition, snow and ice can actually turn into water vapor without actually melting first, Furthermore This is called sublimation. Another point is that, evaporation is an invisible process and can not be seen. On really hot days the process of evaporation is greater and water vapor is formed quicker. Moreover, after evaporation has occurred ; the next step in the water cycle is condensation and precipitation.

The second and third step in the water cycle is Condensation and precipitation. Condensation is when the gas forms clouds. Furthermore, when the clouds get too heavy precipitation occurs ; Precipitation is when rain, hail, sleet or snow falls. For an example, condensation is formed because of temperature changes, Furthermore, warmer air contains more water vapor. Another fact about condensation is that it is the opposite of evaporation because it changes state and transforms from a gas into liquid water. In addition, precipitation can only be a type of rain so it can’t be something like lightning or thunder because it can’t melt. After condensation and precipitation have happened the final stage in the water cycle is runoff.

After evaporation, condensation and precipitation ; the final step in the water cycle is runoff. Runoff is when the water falls to the ground ( precipitation) The water finds it’s way on the earth’s surface into puddles, rivers, streams etc. It then restarts the cycle and evaporates. Furthermore, some of precipitation falls directly into rivers, puddles, streams, it will then evaporation. In addition in cold areas snow or hail can possibly fall. If   it does get hotter it may melt and turn into a liquid water and runoff into puddles etc. Another point is that, when water falls on vegetation it is possible that it will evaporation from leaves/ nature back into water vapor.

Overall there's four-steps in the water cycle Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation and Runoff. This cycle is never ending and the water is recycled throughout this process ; Furthermore, in this cycle the water changes state. Overall if a step was skipped or missed in the water cycle it wouldn’t work properly ,Furthermore The water cycle is important because water is needed for a lot of things like Irrigation, Domestic Use, Industry and a lot of other things.

I can recognize and understand a vaterily of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns.

Walt :Recognise and understand a variety of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns

In this unit I have been learning about:
  • The parts of speech.
  • The types of nouns.
  • The types of sentences.

In this unit, I found challenging learning the different types of nouns.

Something new I learnt was what the differernt types of nouns are, they are proper, common, collective and abstract.

Librarian- Distinction evidence 21

On Tuesday there was a library meeting to practice using the library website so we can teach others next week. We all had to review a book, so we could teach others how to do it. I reviewed Summer's Dream ( My favorite book). I made sure to add detail, age suitably, gender and the type of things you would see in a review.

Here is my Review:
Review: Summer's dream is a book suitable for 10 + girls. This book is a relatable story with a types of drama. This story is a heartbreaking, tragic book that follows a dream to become a professional ballerina in this book Summer pushes herself for perfection. This book is quite a sad story.

Who would enjoy this?: People that are interested in intense sports like ballet or gymnastics.

After we all reviewed a book, Mrs Ward told us which class we would be teaching and who we would be teaching with. We were put with year sevens so we would be able to help them. I am with Brook R and we are teaching room 24 next week.

On Thursday I had reading to the juniors with Zainab. When the bell rang we headed straight to the library to collect the books . I collected some books from the library appropriate for girls and boys. We then headed towards the junior area in search of kids to read too. I found one girl who really liked Barbie books and then another girl joined. Some of the books I read were Barbie And The Musketeres, Barbie Princess Charm School, Some Spot The Dog books and more. At about 1:20 we headed back to the library to allow time to return the books. Overall I think it was a really sucessful session.

On Friday I was going to help Honor with reading to the juniors but it was raining so we asked Mrs Ward if there was any other jobs we could do. She told us we could help by bringing a Scholastics box over to room 22. We made sure to respect the books in the box.

The Care value:
The care value I showed was commuity because I was a good commuity member by helping Honor since Makayla who she is usually with was at Te Haupa.
I showed leadership by :
Being a leader and showing the leadership values while in the junior area as well as motivating kids to read.

I have continued to be a good role model by:
Being a good leader and showing the care values so they could be role modelled to the juniors.

Afterward we headed to Westfield mall. We went to a range of shops like hair dresses, gift shops, Rebel Sport, Macpac, JB Hi Tech where we got a 20$ gift vocher from, Farmers, and more. Mostly we gave them the notices and some gave us contact detail. We got some good prizes from Noel Leeming. Tomorrow Kyla, Emma, Dylan and Hannah are going to Hornby and Barrington. Overall I think it was a sucessful day and I made sure to show my care values at the mall and be respectful if shops said no.

Apply simple linear proportions- Maths

Walt: Apply simple linear proportions.
Extended abarst task: Link
Comparing two strategy’s task: Link
A link to one of the strategy’s proof: Link
The   strategy’s we did were:

•Turn improper fractions into mixed numbers by using division, like mixed numbers by using division like 47/7 to 6 5/7.
•Order fractions including halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, tenths
•Order fractions with unlike denominators finding a common denominator.
•Choose equivalent fractions from a set of fractions, like 2/3 = 8/12 and - Find the common denominator of 2 different fractions to help me work out equivalent fractions, like ¼ = 3/12, 4 x 3 = 12 so 4 and 3 will divide equally into 12 equal parts So ¼ 12 is 12 ÷ 4 = 3
•Use numbers to compare ratios with proportions, like 2:5 or 3:4 (which is greater?).

The strategy I found most challenging was probably turning fractions into mixed numbers.
My next step is to set a new maths goal.

Librarian- Distinction evidence 19

On Monday their was no librarian because of a teacher only day.

On Thursday Zainab and I had reading to the juniors. First we headed to the library when the bell rang to collect some books to read. Afterward we headed to the juniors area in search of kids to read to. I started reading Dora And The Dance Moves to one girl and then a whole group of them joined. Some of the books I read were Sofia The First, Spot Goes To The Park, Spot Goes To School and many more. At about 1:15 we collected up the books and headed to the library. Overall I think all the kids enjoyed it and it was very successful. In general it is easier to find kids because they mostly just come to us instead of Zainab and I having to look/ask kids.

On Friday I helped Honor with her reading to the juniors. First we headed to the library to collect the beanbags and books. We decided to bring the beanbags because it wasn't wet or damp it was only very windy.  I made sure to respect the books. Afterward we grabbed the beanbags and headed to the juniors area. When we were in the junior a girl fall over, so I helped her by taking her to the duty teacher. Another girl also fell over so Honor took her to Mr McAvan. I ended up reading several Barbie books, a Dora book and a fairy book to about three or so kids for the majority of lunchtime. All the kids seemed to really enjoy the session and it was one of the best yet.

Care value:
The care value I showed was community  because I turned up to my duty and was a positive community member while in the library and the juniors area.

How I showed leadership:
I showed leadership by  motivating kids to try and read the books themselves and motivating kids to read.

How I have continued to be a good role model:

Mini Olympics: Wednesday
On Wednesday we had the mini Olympics here at school. Mr Foreman emailed the student leaders the night before to explain to us what was going on. Then at 10:30 we were told to go to the hall to met with Mr Foreman so he could explain all the sports and make sure everyone knew what they were doing. After morning tea Mr Foreman told us to go straight to the hall to help set things up and get in the right place. The house captains had to stand with a flag so everyone would know where there house was sitting. Then when Mr Foreman gave us the signal we had to go to the hall foyer with our flags. When we were introduced we had to come out holding the flag. Later on we had to lead our house out onto the cricket pitch and get them in their correct lines. (Since the group was split into four groups K1, K2, K3,and K4.) I made sure to specially help the little kids get in the right line and be sitting down. Then we had to practice our house chant with them for the house chant competition. Next K1 and K2 went together to there events and K3 and K4 went to a separate event. I was in K3 and Hannah was in K4 so we worked together. The first event we went to was equestrian. I made sure that everyone was listening and organised. The second event we went to was target shooting, I did the same and made sure everyone sat down and all had a turn. The third event we had was sprints, I mainly helped a little girl who needed help going at the right time. Our last event was leap frog, I basically just made sure everyone knew what they were doing. During the day I handed out heaps of pozis and helped pack up.

Bake Sale: Thursday.
On Thursday the year eights had a bake sale to raise money for the Wellington trip in November. At around about 10:30 we started to set up for the bake sale. I made sure to ask where the food went and put it at the correct table either Juniors, middle school or senior. Then we all evenly split ourselves around the three tables. Honor, Samara, Sam L, Lauren and I went to the middle school table and started organizing the prices for the food and going around classes and telling them they could come out. Honor and I went around room 1, 2, 3 and 4. Then the bake sale started I made sure to explain all the prices to the kids, listen, speak loudly, give them the correct amount of change and be friendly. We sold everything, which was better then last time because last time we had some spare food. Afterward I helped pack up by bringing a table back and returning containers to zone 4.

Care value:
The care value I showed was excellence because I tried my best and didn't give up because I had to deal with some challenging behaviour and kids.

How I showed leadership:

I showed leadership by stepping up as a student leader and doing what was expected of me at the event.

How I have continued to be a good role model:
I have continued to be a good role model this week by role modelling positive behavior at the mini Olympics and at the bake sale.

Kauri team event- Distinction evidence 17

Today we had a Kauri assembly. First we sang the waitia, I made sure to sing with pride. Next some certificates were handed out. I got an ASB certificate and accepted my award in a positive way. Afterward Mrs Pattern and Mrs Hall talked to us about not going on the grass when it is muddy. They also told us about the assembly focus, which was sit quietly and listen respectfully. I made sure do to that throughout the assembly. Afterward room 11 shared their learning with us, I made sure to listen and be respectful to their learning. Next Ryan and Jake told us about a football tournament that was coming up. I made sure to still listen even through I wasn't very interested. Later on was game time, we played charades with Olympia sports. I made sure to sit quietly because a lot of people around me were talking. At the end of assembly I got a pozi, which meant I could get the assembly value focus care ticks, I made sure to return the pozi so it could be reused for the next assembly. Lastly I showed my care values by entering and exiting respectfully.

The Care value I showed was respect because I sat queily and listening respectfully. I showed leadership by showing my care values. I have continued to be a good role model by role modelling positive behavior to the other classes, mainly the year fours and fives.

On Monday we had a leadership meeting at morning tea. Mr Forman came in and talked to us about the mini olympics that would be happening on Thursday the 18th. He told us to make a doc with our ideas on it. In the leadership catch up in the afternoon we did this, I made sure to think of sensible ideas that could actually happen and be resilient. Some of my ideas were:

  • Shot put
  • Gymnastics (Basics skills)
  • Hurdles
  • Volleyball - Hitting the ball into hoops.
  • Mini hockey and soccer.
We added all our ideas onto one docment. Since Victor was away I helped Honor to put cultural into the olympics we came up with:

  • At the opening ceremony we could get some seniors to hold the flags.
  • Update of the nationalities on how they’re doing in the olympics.
  • They could dress up in house mufti or the colours of their flag mufti, but has to be sports wear.
The care value I showed was active thinking because I contributed to class and group discussion by sharing my ideas. I showed leadership by turning up to the meeting and being a good leader around the school. I have continued to be a good role model to others by showing my care values and role modelling my leadership skills around the school.

Librarian- Distinction evidence 15

On Monday I had library mentor with Tracy and Warisha. It was crazy as there were a lot of kids in the library. When I was filling the books I made sure to be aware of others because there was so many people and a lot of juniors, so I was very careful. When we were issuing books, I checked to make sure all the books were returned properly because it was mad!! After the library was closed I made sure to put books away and clean up the library, because there were books everywhere. I think I really steped up as a leader.

On Thursday I had reading to the juniors with Zainab. First we headed to the library to collect some books. Since the library was actullay closed and only librarians were allowed in, we decided not to take the beanbags. Afterward we headed to the juniors area in search of kids to read to. I ended up reading to about four or so kids, so it was quite a good session even without the beanbags. I read Barbie I Want To Be A Teacher, Barbie: Princess Charm School, I Am Absolutely To Small To Go To School and more. I ended up reading the Barbie books about four times! At about 20 past we headed back to the library to allow time to return the equiment and put the books in the right place.

On Friday I helped Honor with her reading to the juniors. First we went to the library to collect some books to read. I ended up reading several Barbie books to read to about three kids, who seemed to really enjoy it.

On Monday at morning tea we had a student’s leaders meeting. The first thing we discussed was the flags we organised a roster for this term, the roster is Sam L, Samara and I are doing the flags in the morning. In the afternoon Jack and Jonathan are doing them. It will swap over next week. The second thing we discussed was our action plans and what we need to do to complete them. The house captains need to have a meeting with Mr Brown. The last thing we discussed was leadership badges. Mr Ladbrook checked with everyone to make sure they were achieving there excellence and merit badges. Overall I think it was a good meeting and was a leader by turning up.

In the afternoon there was a whole school assembly. Half of the house captains sat up the front to make sure everyone knew what to say. I wasn't one of them so I made sure to still show my care values while sitting up the front and enter and exit respectful.

On Monday there was a library meeting at 12:40. The meeting was about teaching/ learning how to use the library website so we can teach others. First we learnt how to get onto it. Next we learnt about renewing books and looking at our borrower history and what books we have out. Afterward we learnt the two ways to reverse books either by clicking reverse or drag and dropping it. We then watched a video about how to use it. We also discussed whether we needed our library day changed due to Te Haupa or peer mediator. The last thing we did in the meeting was talk about a mini olympics that could be hold in the library and discussed what we could do and how many sessions we would need. Since the library was closed I did not need to do library mentor. At relax and read time we needed to practice using the library website so we are reading for teaching the kids next week.

On Thursday since Mrs Ward was away there needed to be someone to help issue and return the books at the class visits. Since Zainab and I had finished our SML, we offered to help. We issued and returned books for room 17 and room 19. We also got books out for the class and helped kids find books. I made sure to be friendly to the kids and ask their names as well as telling them if they had an overdue book and renewing it for them. I personally think I was a good leader and role model when I was in the library and made sure to be respectful to the classroom teacher.

At lunch we had reading to the juniors when we found kids in the junior area we brought them back to the library because it was very wet outside. I read some Barbie books to them. They seemed to really enjoy it. I made sure when I took them back to the junior area, to make sure they didn't walk through the basketball court!

On Friday morning I helped file the books because there was a lot to do!! I also helped Honor with her reading to the juniors.

The care value I showed was respect because I was respectful in the library and showed respect to the teachers and children. I showed leadership by stepping up as a leader and helping out at the library. I have continued to be a good role model by showing my care values in the library and role modelling a positive way to handle the books and equipment.
